THE TEN COMMANDMENTS AS APPLIED TO CHRISTIANS

The Ten Commandments is a summary of the unchangeable moral law of God given to ISRAEL (Ex.19:25) NOT the church. They were first given in their written form to the people of Israel when they were camped at Mount Sinai, about 50 days after they left Egypt (Ex.19:10-25). These Laws were written by the finger of God on two tablets of stone. The first tablets were broken by Moses when he brought them down from the mount (Ex.32:19), being thrown by him onto the ground in his anger against the sin of the people. At God's command, he took up into the mount two other tablets of stone that he hewed, and God wrote on them “the words that were on the first tables” (Ex.34:1-4). These tablets were afterwards placed in the ark of the covenant (Deut. 10:5; 1 Kings 8:9). Their later history is not known. They are as a whole called “the covenant” (Deut. 4:13), and “the tables of the covenant” (Deut. 9:9, 11; Heb. 9:4), and “the testimony.”
God speaks in many ways to people; conscience, other people, His Word, a still, small voice, etc. But He never spoke in such a way as He did in the TEN COMMANDMENTS. God had given this law to man before; it was written in their hearts; but sin had dreadfully defaced it, so the tables of stove were necessary to revive their knowledge of it. The Law is spiritual, and touches the secret thoughts, desires, and dispositions of the heart. Its main demand is LOVE. Without true heart-felt love, only outward obedience to God takes place and it is simply hypocrisy. God demands perfect, unfailing, and constant obedience. Whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all, (James 2:10). Whether in our heart, mind or our conduct, be it in thought, word, or deed . . . to omit or to change anything is sin, and the wages of sin is death (Rom.6:23).

The Ten Commandments are divided into two different major divisions. The first part deals with man’s relationship to God (1-4), and the second part deals with man’s relationship to man (5-10).

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

#1. Exodus 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. [KJV] Israel had just come from Egypt, a land of many idols and many gods. Because each god represented a different condition of life, it was common to worship many gods so as to get the maximum number of blessings. When God told His people to worship and believe in Him, that wasn’t really so hard for them . . . BUT, they just added one more god to their list. But when God said, “You shall have no other gods before me,” that was not so easy for the people to accept and do. They should have learned by now that the God who led them out of Egypt was the ONE and only true God, and they could never be His people . . . no matter how faithfully they kept the other nine commandments IF they did not keep the 1st commandment. That is why God made this one His first commandment and stressed it more than the others.

Today we can allow many things to become gods to us: money, fame, work, family, loved ones, pleasure, etc. can become gods when we concentrate too much on them and not enough on God. When we do this, we put God on a back burner, He is no longer first and this angers Him. No one sets out intentionally to worship these things. But the amount of time we devote to them, makes them gods to us and in the end . . . they control our thoughts and energies. This is why we MUST let God be the center of our lives . . . to keep any/all of these things from turning into gods to us.

The first commandment is about WHAT we worship, and that is JEHOVAH GOD, He and He alone. The worship of creatures or anything else is strictly forbidden. Anything that comes short of perfect love,
gratitude, reverence, or worship, breaks this commandment. Whatsoever ye do, do all the glory of God.

How does this Law apply to us in the New Testament? We must NOT worship anyone or anything other than Almighty God.

Acts 17:29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device. (KJV) . . . Our soul bears the image of God, and God is NOT and CANNOT be conveyed by ANY carving, molding or painting!

Rom. 1:22-23 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
(KJV) . . . ALL images are what man thinks God looks like! NO man has ever seen God, for God the Father is SPIRIT! (John 4:24). HOW can anyone even begin to think they know what God looks like? They are "fools."

1 Cor. 5:11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat. (KJV) . . . IF any professing Christian does ANY of the above, stay away from them! Separate and withdraw from such a person. Do NOT associate with him in any way.

1 Cor. 10:14 Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry. (KJV) . . . Quite clear! Quite correct!

1 Peter 4:3 For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries: (KJV) . . . What we did "before Christ" (like the above), was wrong, and now that we are "in Christ" we must not indulge in them any more.

1 John 5:21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen. (KJV) . . . The word idols means an image, sculpture, figure, heathen deities, etc. which would represent anything, particularly anything invisible; anything designed to supposedly represent God. STAY AWAY!
************************************************************

# 2 Exodus 20:4-6 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: [5] Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; [6] And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. [KJV] . . . The second commandment refers to the worship we are to give to the Lord our God. God strictly forbids us to make any image or picture of the deity, in any way, shape or shape, for any purpose; to worship any creature, image, or picture. But this commandment extends much further. ALL forms of superstition are forbidden. The use of any human inventions in the worship of God is forbidden. Col. 3:5 states “covetousness…is idolatry.” Anything that you give yourself over to, becomes your “god.” Most people do not worship Bacchus, the Greek and Roman god of wine of long ago, BUT they worship the bottle just the same. There are millions of alcoholics in our country. Millions of others worship the goddess of sex. Millions more worship money. ANYTHING that you give your time, heart, and soul, becomes your god. God clearly tells us that we are not to have any gods before Him.

How does this Law apply to us in the New Testament? We should NOT make any idol (of anything) to worship.

Rom. 1:23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. (KJV) . . . Many people are fools. In their views of God, they change Him into a man made image, an idol. They forsake Him.

Rev. 9:20 And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk: (KJV) . . . The rest of the men means the ungodly, "did not repent of," meaning they refused to give up worship of devils and idols. They, like Pharaoh hardened their hearts against God. *******************************************************

# 3 Exodus 20:7 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. [KJV] . . . God’s Name is special because it reveals His personal identity. Using it for no good reason or in a curse as is so common today is a SIN against Almighty God . . . although millions fail to realize just how serious this is. The way we use God’s Name shows how we really feel about Him. We should ALWAYS respect and fear His Name and use it properly, speaking it only in praise or worship, NEVER in a curse or joke of any kind. We should NEVER take lightly the abuse or dishonor of His Name. The Lord will NOT hold anyone guiltless that takes His Name in vain. He will always punish the sins of those who hate Him.

The third commandment teaches us the manner of worship. It must be with total reverence and sincerity. All false oaths are forbidden. All profane cursing breaks this command. It matters not whether it be of God Himself, the Word of God, God’s children or sacred things; ALL these things break this commandment, and there is NO profit, honor, or pleasure in them for anyone. You must NEVER worship or bow down to ANY idol of ANY kind, because the Lord God is a most jealous God who will NOT share your affection with any other god!

Using the Lord’s name in “vain” means blasphemy. This is SO common today, the media, movies, TV, movie stars, politicians, etc.. It is wrong to use God’s Name in vain because He is God and He is Holy! Many people can't even speak without using profanity. Someone once said: “When I was converted, I lost over half of my vocabulary!” I, personally, know what he meant.

How does this Law apply to us in the New Testament? Taking the Lord’s Name in vain is a sin.

Matthew 12:35-37 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. 36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. 37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned. (KJV) . . . Very sobering words from our Lord!

1 Cor. 12:3 Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. (KJV) . . . No TRUE Christian can curse or blaspheme our precious Saviour and Lord!

Colossians 3:8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. (KJV) . . . You cannot do it alone, BUT, you have the Holy Spirit to help you, and with His help, you CAN do it!

James 2:7 Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called? (KJV) . . . Many "professing" Christians are guilty of this!
********************************************************

# 4 Exodus 20:8-11 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. [9] Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: [10] But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: [11] For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. [KJV] . . . The Sabbath day was given to the nation Israel in an unusual way. It was a covenant, a token between God and the children of Israel (Ex.31:13–17). God set aside the Sabbath as a day for rest and worship. The Jewish Sabbath is Saturday. Christians set aside their day of rest and worship as Sunday, the first day of the week, the day when Christ was resurrected.

How does this Law apply to us in the New Testament? Since Jesus was resurrected on the first day of the week, we set aside that as a day of worship, praise and rest.

Acts 20:7 And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight. (KJV) . . . Sunday was then observed by Christians as time of worship and praise to our God. (1 Cor.16:2; Rev.1:10).
************************************************

The second part of the commandments deal with man’s relationship with man. It begins in the home.

# 5 Exodus 20:12 Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. [KJV] . . . This is the first commandment with a promise attached. To live in peace for generations in the Promised Land, the Israelites would need to respect authority and build strong families. Just what does it mean to “honor” parents? It means speaking well of them and politely to them. It means showing them courtesy and respect. BUT . . . we are NOT to obey them IF it would mean disobeying God. It means to follow their teaching and example of putting God first. Even those children who find it difficult to get along with their parents, are still commanded to honor them. There are MANY children today who take their parents to nursing homes and just forget about them. I see this all the time. I have taught Bible classes in nursing homes for over 20 years. Dumping parents and forgetting they ever existed is NOT honoring them.

How does this Law apply to us in the New Testament? We must obey honor and our parents.

Luke 18:20 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother. (KJV) . . . Our Lord Jesus also tells us to honor our parents.

Eph. 6:1-3 Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. 2 Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) 3 That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth. (KJV) . . . This obedience should be in the Lord, done in respect and regard for Christ.

Col. 3:20 Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord. (KJV) . . . This requires them to yield humble subjection to those that brought them into this world, or have authority over them, paying respect to them, showing kindness to them and submitting to parental discipline.
*************************************************

# 6 Exodus 20:13 Thou shalt not kill. [KJV] . . . This verse is used by many people who are opposed to war. The commandment “Thou shalt not kill” was not given to a nation; it was given to individuals. One person should NOT kill another. “Thou shalt not kill” has nothing at all to do with being a soldier or with the execution of a criminal (Gen.9:6). It is speaking of murder, which our Lord said comes from anger, and we are not even to be angry with our brother (Mat.5:21-22; 1 John 3:15). “Thou shalt not kill” also means not taking your own life (suicide). Furious passions, stirred up by anger, drugs or drunkenness, are NO excuse. ALL fighting, be it for sport, wages or out of anger and malice, breaks this command, and the bloodshed is murder. Thou shalt not kill also includes abortion!

Tempting people with vice and crimes which shorten life, are also included. This command forbids all envy, malice, hatred, or anger, all provoking or insulting language. This commandment demands a spirit of love, kindness, longsuffering and forgiveness.

How does this Law apply to us in the New Testament? We must NOT kill.

Matthew 5:21-22 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: 22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. (KJV) . . . Any time that our Lord says: "But I say unto you," a hard lesson follows. Being angry with our brother or sister without a cause, is in danger of judgment.

Matthew 19:18 He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, (KJV) . . . We shall do NO murder.

Mark 10:19 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother. (KJV) . . . Do NOT kill.

Luke 18:20 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother. (KJV) . . . Do NOT kill.

Romans 13:9 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. (KJV) . . . Do NOT kill.

Galatians 5:21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. (KJV) . . . Murderers will go to Hell without Jesus.

1 John 3:15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. (KJV) . . . IF we hate our brother, we could end up taking his life. Hatred and malice are like cancers to our souls.

Rev. 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. (KJV) . . . Murderers will end up in Hell . . . without Jesus!
***********************************************

# 7 Exodus 20:14 Thou shalt not commit adultery. [KJV] . . . Today we live in the middle of a sex revolution. ALL sex is still a sin when it is committed out of wedlock. God makes this very clear. And I am NOT saying same-sex marriage is right! It is NOT right! People may think times have changed, BUT God NEVER changes!

How does this Law apply to us in the New Testament? Sex (physical or mental) outside marriage is sin, and so is ANY homosexual sin.

Matthew 5:27-28 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: 28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. (KJV) . . . If you look at a woman and lust after her, you have commited adultery with her. Gals . . . this goes for YOU too!

Matthew 19:18 He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, (KJV) . . . Do NOT commit adultery.

Mark 10:19 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother. (KJV) . . . Do NOT commit adultery.

Luke 18:20 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother. (KJV) . . . Do NOT commit adultery.

(KJV) . . . Do NOT commit adultery.

1 Corinthians 6:15-16, 18 Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid. 16 What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh. . . . 18 Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. (KJV) . . . Do NOT commit adultery or fornication.

James 2:11 For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law. (KJV) . . . Do NOT commit adultery.
**********************************************************

# 8 Exodus 20:15 Thou shalt not steal. [KJV]. . . IF you are allowed to commit adultery, then you should be allowed to steal. If one is OK, then all should be OK; but, if one is wrong, then all are wrong.

How does this Law apply to us in the New Testament? We are NOT to take what does not belong to us.

Matthew 19:18 He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, (KJV) . . . Do NOT steal.

Mark 10:19 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother. (KJV) . . . Do NOT steal.

Luke 18:20 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother. (KJV) . . . Do NOT steal.

(KJV) . . . Do NOT steal.

Ephesians 4:28 Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. (KJV) . . . Many people stole things before they became Christians. But, when Christ comes in to your heart and life, you do NOT steal any more.

BUT . . . what about all those who are on food stamps and other government assistance? MANY of these people are well able to go out and get a job and support themselves! THIS in my book, is STEALING! They are stealing from those who work hard and pay taxes and I think it is outragious!

1 Thes. 4:11 And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you; (KJV)
2 Thes. 3:10-12 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. 11 For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies. 12 Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread. (KJV) . . . There are far too many people on welfare! There are far too many who have a passel of kids who expect the government to support them. I look forward to the day this will no longer be. One day, Jesus will make things right! People will have to work or they will not eat~!
************************************************************

# 9 Exodus 20:16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. [KJV] . . . To bear false witness against your neighbor is to lie about him.

How does this Law apply to us in the New Testament? We must NOT lie or gossip or backbite anyone.

Matthew 19:18 He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, (KJV) . . . Do NOT bear false witness.

Mark 10:19 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother. (KJV) . . . Do NOT bear false witness.

Luke 18:20 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother. (KJV). . . Do NOT bear false witness.

(KJV) . . . Do NOT bear false witness.

Ephesians 4:25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. (KJV) . . . Do NOT bear false witness.

Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. (KJV) . . . Do NOT bear false witness.

Ephesians 4:31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: (KJV) . . . NO evil speaking.

Titus 3:2 To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men. (KJV) . . . NO evil speaking.

James 4:11 Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge. (KJV) . . . NO evil speaking.

1 Peter 2:1 Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, (KJV) . . . NO evil speaking.

1 Peter 3:9 Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing. (KJV) . . . NO evil speaking. No cursing, but blessing.
*************************************************************

# 10 Exodus 20:17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's. [KJV] . . . Covetousness is idolatry (Col.3:5). This is one of the great sins in our day. God strictly condemns killing, adultery, stealing, bearing false witness, and covetousness.

How does this Law apply to us in the New Testament? Covetousness is
a strong, lusting passion to possess worldly things.

(KJV) . . . Do NOT covet.

Colossians 3:5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: (KJV) . . . Do NOT covet.

Ephesians 5:5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. (KJV) . . . Do NOT covet.

Hebrews 13:5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. (KJV) . . . Do NOT covet.

1 Timothy 6:9-10 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. 10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. (KJV). . . Do NOT covet.

Matthew 6:20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: (KJV) . . . Do NOT covet.

Sometimes covetousness is a much more aggravated form of greed, which boils down to cold hearted worldliness.
************************************************************

613 laws boiled down to:

6 Laws in: Isaiah 33:15 He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from seeing evil; [KJV] . . . You must be honest and fair, speak properly, refuse to make a profit by fraud, never accept bribes, refuse to listen to those who plot murder, turn away from all temptation to do wrong.

3 Laws in: Micah 6:8 He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? [KJV] . . . You must do what is right, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God.

2 Laws in Matthew 22:37-40 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. [38] This is the first and great commandment. [39] And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. [40] On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. [KJV] . . . You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. The second is also very important: Love your neighbor as yourself. The whole Law of Moses and the teachings of all the prophets go hinge on these two commandments.

1 Law in: Matthew 7:12 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. [KJV] . . . Do for others what you would like them to do for you. Treat others as you want to be treared! This is a summary of all that is taught in the law and the prophets. LOVE!!
