Eternal Security?

Can a person who is once saved and places faith in Christ Jesus, ever lose their salvation?

Is it yes? Or is it no? What is "saving faith"? What if someone claims faith in Christ but shows no proof of changing their life? Is one single act of faith, one time in a persons life, all that is required for salvation? Is salvation truly a free Gift, with nothing other than faith that is required to obtain it? What if a once saved person commits some really horrible sin, was that person ever truly saved? Are works proof of saving faith?
