Christian Meditation on God’s Word
As Christians, many of us read our Bibles and pray, but are we really meditating on God’s Word? And do people even know what Christian meditation means?
When the Lord called Joshua to lead Israel after Moses’ death, He told him: Joshua 1:8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. (KJV) . . . The Lord wanted to fill Joshua’s heart with the Word so he would know precisely what to do and how to lead the people according to God’s standards and commands. And that’s exactly what He wants to do in our lives. IF we meditate on Scripture, the Lord will reveal His truths and instructions for us.
Christian Meditation includes three things.
#1. Observation. We need to start by asking these ourselves questions: Who is the writer? To whom is he speaking? What is the passage saying? KNOW what it really says. What is it saying to me? What does it say elsewhere in the Scriptures?
#2. Interpretation. What does the Passage really mean? What is it that the Lord wants me to learn from it? What is it saying to me? How can I apply it to my life?
#3. Applying it to our life. I must persistently affirm that God loves me unconditionally. Knowing that He always does what is best for me increases my trust in Him. I must ask the Lord to show me what areas of my life He wants spiritual growth. Each trial He allows is intended to strengthen me in a precise area of weakness.
Whatever the Lord allows us to go through is always for our benefit. Meditation is a fulfilling and rewarding experience that greatly increases our closeness with the Lord and our interest in the Bible as we hear Him speak to us personally through His Word. Always remember that God has also given us His indwelling Spirit Who enables us to interpret Scripture properly and gives us the power to us to apply it to our lives.
#1. Consistent meditation on Scripture will build a closer fellowship with the Lord. Our faith in Him greatly increases.
#2. Regular meditation on the Word of God can change our life for the better.
#3. Steady, sound meditation on Scriptures will show that God really does have a specific purpose for us.
