HOW
CAN I BE FREE OF FEAR?
What
is FEAR??
Fear is alarm, anxiety, cold feet,
confusion, discontent, disquiet, depression, dismay, dread,
horror, loneliness, mistrust, uneasiness, unrest, name a few
things. All these things are from within us. On our own, we
cannot conquer them. We cannot conquer fear, we must have
help.
What
does the Bible say?
Genesis 15:1 After these things the word of the Lord came unto Abram in
a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy
exceeding great reward. [KJV]
God gave Abram two good reasons
for courage: (1) He promised to defend Abram "I am your
shield", and (2) He promised to be Abram’s "very
great reward." When you fear what lies ahead, remember that God will
stay with all His children through all their difficult times,
and He has promised you great blessings.
2 Timothy
1:7 For
God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and
of love, and of a sound mind. [KJV] Paul mentions three
characteristics of an effective Christian: power, love, and
self-discipline. These are available to us because the Holy
Spirit lives in us. IF we follow His leading each day, our
life will exhibit these traits.
Genesis
3:8 And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking
in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife
hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the
trees of the garden. [3:10] And he said, I heard thy
voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked;
and I hid myself. [KJV] Like Adam, we have reason to be
afraid of approaching God, if we are not clothed with the
righteousness of Christ. Instead of admitting their sin, and
taking the blame, Adam and Eve tried to excuse their sin,
and lay the blame on others. Many times those that are tempted,
say they are tempted by God. Many are willing to take the
pleasure and profit of sin, but are slow to take the blame
of it. Satan’s temptations are all pleasant; but his arguments
are all deceits; his enticements are all fraudulent. When
he speaks promising words to you, don’t believe him. Sin’s
deceitfulness hardens the heart.
Proverbs
29:25 The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso
putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe. [KJV] Being
afraid of people can hinder you in everything you try to do.
In can even make you afraid to leave your home. On the other
hand, fear of God (respect,
reverence, and trust) is freedom. Why
fear people who can do NO eternal harm? Instead, fear God who
can turn the harm intended by others into good for those who
trust him.
Isaiah
41:10 Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not
dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I
will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand
of my righteousness. [KJV] We need not fear because:
- (1) God is with us
- (2)
God is our God, and
- (3)
God promises us His strength, help, and victory over sin
and death.
Isaiah 43:2 When
thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and
through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou
walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither
shall the flame kindle upon thee. [KJV] Going through
‘rivers of difficulty,’ you will either drown or get stronger.
If you plunge in alone, you are almost certain to drown. But,
if you ask the Lord to go with you, He will protect you. TRUE
believers are precious in God’s sight, He delights in them.
Though we may go through fiery trials and deep waters of tribulation,
God is with us. We need not fear any evil; for He will bear us up, and bring us out. The faithful
are encouraged and greatly comforted.
Isaiah 51:12 I,
even I, am he that comforteth you: who art thou, that thou
shouldest be afraid of a man that shall die, and of the son
of man which shall be made as grass; [KJV] Just as Israel
feared Babylon, but not God, so too we today, (God’s children)
tend to fall into the same trap. We fear what man can do to us and forget that God’s power is much
greater than any man’s power. We misplace our fear and our love. We
should fear God’s power and love His mercy.
Luke 12:7 But even the very hairs of your head
are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value
than many sparrows. [KJV] Our true value
is what God thinks we’re worth, NOT what people around us think. People
evaluate and categorize us according to how we perform, what
we achieve, and how we look. But God loves us because we belong
to Him. He knows every tiny detail about us, so we have
no reason to fear.
Hebrews 13:5-6 Let your
conversation be without covetousness; and be content with
such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave
thee, nor forsake thee. [6] So that we may boldly say, The
Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto
me. [KJV] We should keep our lives free from the love
of money, being satisfied with what we have. For God has promised
us: "I will never leave you; I will never abandon
you." That is why we can say with confidence: "The
Lord is my Helper, so why should I be afraid of what can mere
mortals do to me?"
Psalm 34:18-19 The Lord
is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such
as be of a contrite spirit. [19] Many are the afflictions
of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them
all. [KJV] The Lord is close to those in trouble, whatever
it may be, and He rescues those who are crushed in spirit.
We face many problems, but the Lord is there in each and every
one. So, when trouble strikes, don’t get frustrated or angry
with God. Instead, admit you can’t do it alone, and thank
Him for being by your side.
Genesis 28:15 And, behold,
I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou
goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will
not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken
to thee of. [KJV] The Messiah came from Jacob, and is
the greatest blessing this world has ever known. ALL that
are blessed, are blessed in Christ. No one from ANY family
on Earth are shut out from His blessedness, only those that
shut themselves out. Jacob had to fear danger from his brother
Esau; but God promises to keep him. He had a long journey
ahead of him; to an unknown country; but, "Behold,
I am with thee." God promises to bring him back again.
He seemed to be forsaken by all his friends; but God assured
him, "I will not leave thee." Whomever
God loves, He never leaves. God’s true children
have no need to fear!
