God's Ultimate and Sovereign Godhood
His Absolute Godhood is Seen in Creation
WHOM did God ask advice from before He created the Universe? NO one! Whom did He consult when He decided the many different varieties of His countless creatures? NO one! He did everything after the counsel of His own will! He decided that birds should fly in the air, beasts would roam the earth, and fishes would live in the sea! He decided there would be vast differences among creatures instead of making everything the same (Gen.1:20-25). He made a revolving world. He decided to create the exalted seraphim to stand before His throne throughout endless ages (Isa.6:2,6), and also to make other creatures would live a short time (Ps.144:4; Jam.4:14)? Is He not the undisputed Sovereign in all His creative acts?
The Three Persons of the Godhead were all alone in their awesome majesty. WHY would God take counsel? WHY would he want to, or have any need to? First of all, neither angels or man existed! Both were created by the wondrous wisdom of God! Could any mere man, no matter how worldly wise, add to God's knowledge, had he been there? Could he correct God's errors? Man may THINK God makes mistakes . . . BUT, God NEVER makes a mistake!
God sovereignly gave His countless creatures their many different habitations, and movements, as it pleased Him. God NEVER consulted man about anything! "God set the members everyone of them in the body, as it hath pleased Him" (1 Cor.12:18). Man is simply just one of the many products of His Sovereign creations, just as any other of God's creatures!
Psalm 8:3-4 When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; 4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? (KJV)
Psalm 104:5 Who laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be removed for ever. (KJV)
Proverbs 8:14 Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength. (KJV)
Proverbs 8:22-31 The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old.
23 I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was.
24 When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water.
25 Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth:
26 While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world.
27 When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth:
28 When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep:
29 When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth:
30 Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him;
31 Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men. (KJV) . . . WISDOM!!!
Isaiah 40:13 Who hath directed the Spirit of the LORD, or being his counsellor hath taught him? (KJV)
Isaiah 40:22 It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in: (KJV)
Isaiah 42:8-9 I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images. 9 Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare: before they spring forth I tell you of them. (KJV)
Isaiah 46:9-10 Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me,
10 Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure: (KJV)
Romans 11:34 For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? (KJV)
His Absolute Godhood Seen in Governing
God not only created everything, but everything that He created is under His immediate control. God rules over the works of His Hands. God governs ALL the creatures He has made. God rules the Universe with total control.
When it pleased Him, the sun and moon stood still.
Joshua 10:12-14 Then spake Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon. 13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day. 14 And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel. (KJV)
A single word from Him, and the sun went backward ten degrees on the dial of Ahaz.
Isaiah 38:8 Behold, I will bring again the shadow of the degrees, which is gone down in the sun dial of Ahaz, ten degrees backward. So the sun returned ten degrees, by which degrees it was gone down. (KJV)
At His command the Red Sea stopped its flow, and at His command it resumed its normal course (Exodus 14).
When Elisha prayed, the Lord made iron to float on the top of the water (2 Kings 6:5).
Any time He pleases, He can reverse the order of nature. Consider the fires of Nebuchadnezzar's furnace not burning when Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were cast in (Dan.3).
And the hungry lions never touched Daniel (Dan.6).
What about when the ravens, unclean birds of prey, bringing Elijah food (1 Kings 17:2-7).
At a word from Him who made it, a fish carried money to Peter (Mat.17:24-27).
And a tree withers suddenly (Mat. 21:19).
He calms a raging tempest (Mat.8:23-27).
So it is also with men; for they too, are ruled by God; ruled by His unseen Hand; and most often, it is unknown to themselves.
Little did they know when the sons of Jacob performed the pleasure of God when they sold Joseph into the hands of the Ishmaelites who carried him down into Egypt (Gen.37:28).
What about when Pharaoh's daughter who went to the Nile to bathe . . . did she know that she was being directed by God, to rescue from the water the baby Moses (Ex.2:5-10).
Little did he know it, but in issuing the decree that all the world should be taxed (Luke 2:1) Caesar Augustus was but setting in motion a movement which caused the word and decree of God to be fulfilled. Yes, even "The King's heart is in the hand of the Lord, as the rivers of water: He turneth it whithersoever He will" (Pro.21:1).
And my friends, it is that way with Satan, the old devil, too! He is the (unsuspecting and unwilling) servant of God. He could NOT touch Job without first getting God's permission (Job1:6-12).
He could NOT sift Peter untill he had gotten consent from Christ (Lu.22:31).
And just one word from the Lord Jesus, Satan "left" Him (Mat.4:10-11). God allows him to go just so far and no farther.
Even death, the "king of terrors" (Job.18:14) is absolutely subject to the bidding of the Lord.
In his sermon on Psalm 68:20-21 "unto God the Lord belong the issues from death" . . . the late Spurgeon rightly said, "The prerogative of life or death belongs to God in a wide range of senses. First of all as to natural life, we are all dependent upon His good pleasure. We shall not die until the time which He appoints: for our death-time, like all our time, is in His hands. Our skirts may brush away the portals of the sepulchre, and yet we shall pass the iron gate unharmed if the Lord be our guard. The wolves of disease will hurt us in vain until God shall permit them to overtake us. The most desperate enemies may waylay us, but no bullet shall find its billet in any heart unless the Lord allows it. Our life does not even depend upon the care of angels, nor can our death be compassed by the malice of devils. We are immortal till our work is done, immortal till the immortal King shall call us home to the land where we shall be immortal in a still higher sense. When we are most sick, we need not despair of recovery, since the issues from death are in Almighty hands. 'The Lord killeth and maketh alive: He bringeth down to the grave and bringeth up!' (1 Sam.2:6). When we have passed beyond the skill of the physician we have not passed beyond the succour of our God, to whom belong the issues from death."
His Absolute Godhood Seen in the Giving of the Scriptures
What part did man have in composing the Bible? NONE! The words of Scriptures are Words of God, NOT man! "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God" (2 Tim.3:16). NO part of the Bible was man's idea, and was NOT of human origin! "For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man." God's servants, holy men of God spoke as they "moved by the Holy Spirit" (2 Peter 1:21). HOW did they record what the Holy Spirit had spoken to them . . . by words of man's selecting? NO!!! "Not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Spirit teacheth" (1 Cor.2:13).
Balaam wanted to speak something different than what he did; but he could not (Num.24;10).
Caiaphas prophesied "not of himself." John 11:49-52 And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all, 50 Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. 51 And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation; 52 And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad. (KJV)
Christ haters demanded Pilate make a change in the one sentence which God had moved him to write: JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS, . . . but he stated "What I have written I have written" (John 19:22).
God acted sovereignly in the writing of ALL the Scriptures as in everything else that he has ever done. The very words were chosen by Him; He sovereignly chose all words in the Bible. He did NOT take counsel or ask advise from any angels or men as to what words He should select for the communicating of His thoughts?
His Sovereignty in the Salvation of Mankind
God's absolute and irresistible ownership has been and is being displayed in the spiritual realm as well as in nature.
Isaac is blessed, but Ishmael is cursed (Gen.17:19-21).
Jacob is loved, but Esau is hated (Mal.1:2-3; Rom.9:13).
Israel becomes God's favored people (Deut.14:2; 26:19; 1 Sam.12:22), while other nations remain in idolatry . . . just look around.
Jesse's seven sons were all passed by (1 Sam.16:10-11), and David the shepherd-boy was found to be the one after God's own heart (1 Sam.13:14).
The Saviour took on Him the "seed of Abraham" (Heb. 2:16), not the seed of Adam. His ministry was not worldwide, but confined to the people chosen of God.
The proud Pharisees were rejected (Mat.23), while publicans and harlots are accepted by the sovereign grace of God (Rom.5:8-10).
The rich young ruler (Mat.19:16-22), who from his youth up, had kept the commandments, but went away from Christ "sorrowing," even though he had sought Him with sincerity and humility, while the fallen Samaritan woman (John 4) who was NOT seeking Him rejoiced in the forgiveness of her sins.
Two thieves hung by Christ on the cross; both were guilty, both were right next to Him (Luke 23:42-43). One of them is moved to cry out: "Lord, remember me" and is taken to Paradise, but the other one dies in his sins. Many are called, but few are chosen. (Mat 22:14).
Salvation belongs to God alone! Salvation is God's sovereign work.
God does NOT save a man because he is a sinner . . . for if that were true, He would have to save all people, because ALL are sinners (Rom.3:10,23). Neither can any person come to Christ, for "no man can come except the Father draw him" (John 6:44), and NOT because he repents, for "God gives repentance unto life" (Acts 11:18), and NOT because he believes, for NO one can believe "except it were given him from heaven" (John 3:27), and NOT because he is faithful to the end, because "we are kept by the power of God" (1 Pet.1:5).
Salvation is NOT because of baptism, for many are saved without it, and millions are lost with it. It is NOT because of regeneration, for that would make the new birth a physical duty of mankind.
It is NOT because of morality, for it is those who THINK they are the most moral that are hardest to reach, and many of the worst immoral are saved!
WHAT is the answer? It is the unique and amazing grace of our Sovereign God!
Is God partial? The Bible says He is no respector of persons (Rom.2:11; Eph.6:9; Jam.2:9; 1 Pet.1:17). I believe this. Respect of persons means flavoring one party over another, such as choosing a rich person over a poor one . . . as humans do. God does NOT do this! It matters NOT to God how rich or poor, or what race a person is: red, yellow, black or white. But I believe God is partial, VERY partial to believers!
We are by our nature condemned by the law because of our sins. We are like criminals tried, convicted, sentenced, and on death row. Only God, the Great Judge, can have the sentence executed, OR issue a pardon. Our eternal soul is in His Almighty Hand to do as He pleases.
Can you hear Him? "I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion" (Ro.9:15).
We ALL are guilty, every last one of us! We ALL should receive the death penalty! But . . . it rests with God to pardon whomsoever He may! NONE of us can lay any claim to His favor, for NONE of us could ever be 'good enough'. But, because He is the Lord God, merciful and gracious and delights to pass by transgression and sin, we are extremely blessed!
Is God partial? Partial = biased, prejudiced. I say yes, He is. And He has the perfect right to be! He can dispense His love and mercy to whomever He so pleases, whenever He pleases and grant His gifts upon whomever He desires!
But you say, "Is it reasonable to consider that God who is Love has created millions of creatures who shall be lost . . . seeing that His elect make up but a "remnant" a "few" (Mat.7:14) in comparison with the vast multitudes who die unsaved?
This is NOT a question of reason but of revelation. There are MANY things revealed in the Bible that are completely opposite to man's reasoning.
Is it reasonable to think that God would give His only begotten Son to die for sinners? Reason is completely ruled out here.
If it were in your power, would you want your worst enemy to be tormented eternally? (Rev.20:10). IF you are a "child of God" (1 John 3:10) and honest, you will say No! But God will deal this way with all His enemies, and His sentence will be just and right. "Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right" (Gen.18:25).
How far away is man's reasoning from the teaching of God's Holy Word concerning Eternal Punishment? Would you "laugh at" and "mock" your worst enemy if that enemy was being severely punished and was helpless to deliver himself from that punishment? Yet, what does the Bible say? Scripture clearly states that God will "laugh" at the calamity of His enemies and "mock" when their fear cometh!
Psalm 2:4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. (KJV)
Proverbs 1:26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh; (KJV) . . . Can your reason harmonize this with your knowledge of God? Again . . . If you are honest you will say, No! There are many today, in these new, modern, seeker friendly churches that loudly and blatantly spout the unreasonableness of God's absolute Sovereignty in salvation! How utterly ridiculous!
Satan is the ancient enemy of God and His people. He is the one who has brought about untold and vast evil and wickedness to this world's residents. Old Satan shall one day be securely imprisoned in the bottomless pit (Rev.20:1-3). There he shall remain chained for 1000 years.
SO . . . Another question about being reasonable: "Would you ever consider releasing that the old Devil, Satan from that prison pit after the Earth has been free of him for a 1000 years?" I would want to say your answer would be No! BUT . . . this is exactly what the Divine revelation from God's Word CLEARLY states shall happen.
The Truth of the Bible makes it very clear that God will allow that old serpent to be "loosed" for a little season, after he has been imprisoned for 1000 years. WHY??? You ask. God will permit this even though He knows beforehand (Isa.42:9; 46:9-10) that the result will be a most dreadful revolt on the part of mankind, under Satan . . . a horrendous revolt against God, the worst this Earth has ever witnessed before.
God's ways are VERY different from ours. Isaiah 55:8-9 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. 9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. (KJV) . . . Our minds CANNOT possibly comprehend God's mind, God's thoughts or God's ways! It is utter folly for ANYONE to attempt to voice the reasonableness OR unreasonableness of the works of Almighty God. We simply must always trust and believe what God states! He knows what is best, and He has His reasons.
One of the most blatant sins of this world today is irreverence. Irreverence is NOT only open blasphemy that is SO common and accepted in today's world, nor is it just taking the Lord's Name in vain. Irreverence is also failure to ascribe the glory which is due the great and frightful majesty of Almighty God. It is also failure to accept just WHO this magnificent God is! It is to limit His power and actions by our stupid and degrading ideas. It is trying to bring the Lord God down to our level, done by most 'evangelical' (???) preachers in today's pulpits.
There are multitudes who deny that the Lord God is the omnipotent Creator (John 1:3, 10; 1 Cor.8:6; Eph.3:9; Col.1:16; Heb.1:1-2, 10; 3:3; Rev.3:14).
There are multitudes of professing Christians who deny that God is the absolute Sovereign. People boast of their free will, boast of their power and wealth, and are proud of their achievements. They NEVER consider that their lives are in the Hand of the sovereign Ruler of the Universe! They do NOT consider that they have absolutely NO power to stop His decisions, no more than an tiny kitten has to resist an elephant. They NEVER consider that God is the Potter, and they are just clay in His mighty hands!
The first great lesson we ALL must learn is that God is the Creator, and mankind is the creature! God is the Potter, we are simply clay (Isa.64:8; Rom.9:21). Friend, IF you once knew this, and have forgotten it, you need to re-learn this Truth! God is God and He has the absolute right to dispose of you and me as He sees fit. It is for Him to say where we live . . . be it America or Africa. It is for Him to say under what circumstances we shall live . . . be it in riches or poverty (1 Sam.2:7-8). It is for Him to say if it be in health or in sickness a handicap of some kind (2 Cor.12:9-10). It is also for Him to say how long we shall live . . . be it cut down in youth, like the flower of the field, or to live to an old age. And YES! It is for Him to say where we shall spend eternity.
SO . . . is it ALL in God's Almighty Hands? Don't we have ANY say whatsoever? OH! YES! We do have a choice! But, there are fewer and fewer making the right choice today!
WHAT does God consider the worst sin? Yes, sin is sin! And God hates ALL sin! BUT, in my humble opinion, God hates unbelief! UNBELIEF calls God a "liar." 1 John 5:10-12 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. 11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. (KJV) . . . Doesn't this clearly say HOW to achieve eternal life? Yes, my friend, it does! We DO have a choice.
John 3:15-18 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. (KJV) . . . Very plain! Believing God, believing that Jesus Christ is the Son of God Who gave His life for us, BELIEVING, gives us eternal life in Heaven! Refusing to believe this FACT will give eternal agony in and eternal Lake of Fire (Mat.25:41,46; Rev.20:15).
John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. (KJV) . . . Believing = everlasting Life in Heaven! Refusing to believe = God will condemn you to HELL!
John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. (KJV) . . . When you choose to believe on Jesus, you HAVE everlasting life NOW!
John 8:24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins. (KJV) . . . If you choose to NOT believe, you shall die in your sins (go to Hell).
Christ Jesus is the ONLY Way to Heaven! John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (KJV) . . . Just Jesus has the key to Heaven. Believe it friend.
Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. (KJV) . . . NO other name! NO other 'religion'! Just Jesus!
YES! I do believe that God is prejudiced! IF anyone denies and rejects His only begotten Son, God shall turn away from you! God shall reject YOU! God is VERY biased and opinionated against ANYONE who does NOT accept Christ Jesus as Saviour and Lord of ALL mankind . . . this means ALL people and ALL nations! I truly believe this.
One of the deepest mysteries of the Incarnation of Jesus Christ is that "the Mighty God" descended from highest heaven and took upon Himself the nature of the creature. That which makes the Life of Christ different from all other human lives, was His absolute, joyous and willing submission to the Father's will! "My meat is to do the will of Him that sent Me" (John 4:34). This was the crucial and major thought in His Holy mind, in the 33 years that He lived among men.
Have I profited by the example left us by the Beloved of the Father? Have you? His Divine grace shows us how to act. But, do we do it? We must NOT live for self . . . but live denying self (Mat.10:38; 16:24), as did our precious Saviour and Lord. Only when we are willing to be taught in the school of Christ will we be able to say, "Not my will, but Thine be done" (Luke 22:42). May His Divine grace subdue our rebellious hearts that more and more we can say those words!
