Study on Belief
WHAT
DOES IT MEAN TO BELIEVE?
- To believe
is to: be convinced; to accept; to have no doubt; to consider as true;
to be certain of.
- Faith is: confidence; assurance; trust; dependence; unquestioning
belief.
Most people believe that there is a God out there,
some where; but that is NOT enough! Even the demons believe
that! James 2:19 Thou believest
that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe,
and tremble. [KJV] To simply
have a uncertain feeling that there is a Supreme Being, does
not and can not please nor honor God.
You may know that God’s love and grace
are limitless even if you are not a ‘believer,’
but you may not know that unless you believe on the Name of
Jesus, God’s Son, as your personal Saviour and Lord, you
will never experience that love or that grace, in the salvation
of your soul.
- To believe means
you know you cannot save yourself. You must admit you are a
sinner.
- To believe means
that you know that salvation is through Christ alone, and only
He can save you.
Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation
in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given
among men, whereby we must be saved. [KJV] To
believe means that if you want to go to Heaven, you must go
through Christ. John 14:6 Jesus
saith unto him, I am
the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father,
but by me. [KJV] The
Father is in Heaven.
- To believe means
you know Christ is who He says He is, and will do what He said
He will do. Jesus
was more than just a good man who taught Truths.
- To
believe means you accept what Christ did on the cross; redeeming
your soul from Hell and God’s wrath, and completely forgiving
you of all your sins.
- To believe means
you must have a personal relationship with Christ; trusting
Him as your loyal Friend and Guide in all things. You acknowledge and honor His
awesome worth.
Revelation 5:12 Saying
with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive
power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and
glory, and blessing. [KJV]
- To
believe means you know you MUST obey Christ.
John 15:14 Ye
are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. [KJV]
John 6:29 Jesus answered
and said unto them, This
is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.
[KJV] Jesus’ words. Believing! The only WORK we need
to do!
John 5:24 Verily,
verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth
on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come
into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. [KJV] Jesus’ words.
John 3:18 He
that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth
not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the
name of the only begotten Son of God. [KJV] Jesus’ words.
DO YOU BELIEVE?
Romans 1:16 For I
am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power
of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew
first, and also to the Greek. [KJV]
The message of salvation has life-changing power. We must focus
on God rather than on your own inadequacy. We all are sinners,
and there is just one method of deliverance from condemnation;
that being faith in the mercy of God, through Jesus Christ.
We must build on that faith, purity of heart, grateful obedience,
and earnest desires to improve in all Christian graces. Nothing
but an active faith in Christ can accomplish this.
Romans 4:16-A Therefore
it is of faith, that it might be by grace; [KJV] We, like Abraham, are saved by faith plus nothing.
It is not by loving God and doing good that saves us; neither
is it by faith plus love or by faith plus good deeds, or plus
anything. We are saved only through faith in Christ, trusting
Him to forgive all our sins. God honors faith; and our faith
honors God. Our faith credits to us the righteousness of Jesus.
Faith is clearly is the only instrument by which we receive
the righteousness of God, and the redemption which is by Christ.
It is a GIFT of God. We take or receive it, or reject it.
John 1:12 But as
many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons
of God, even to them that believe on his name: [KJV] Only Jesus has
the awesome power to make us God’s children.
John 3:16 For
God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son,
that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have
everlasting life. [KJV] To “believe”
is more than intelligent agreement that Jesus is God. It means
that we place our trust and confidence in Him. We “believe”
and know, that He alone can save us. “Believing”
is to place Christ in charge of our present plans and eternal
destiny. “Believing” is both trusting His words
as reliable, and to rely on Him for the power (His Holy Spirit)
to change us.
John 20:31 But these
are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ,
the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through
his name. [KJV] The Gospel includes
everything we need to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the
Son of God; through whom we receive eternal life.
John 3:36 He that
believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth
not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth
on him. [KJV] Those who believe
in Jesus have (not will have) everlasting life. To receive eternal
life is to join in God’s life, to one day live with Him
eternally in Heaven. Eternal life begins at the moment of spiritual
rebirth. And once you are a child of God, you are His child
forever!
No one (including the devil) can “pluck you out of His
hand.”
Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace are
ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the
gift of God: [9] Not of works, lest any man should boast. [KJV] Our sincere, heartfelt faith, and God’s grace saves
us.
Psalm 51:17 The
sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite
heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. [KJV] Until we are ready to turn it all over to Him, we do not
have a “broken and a contrite heart.”
Romans 3:25 Whom
God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his
blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins
that are past, through the forbearance of God; [KJV] Christ died in our place, for our sins. God is rightfully
angry at sinners. We have rebelled against Him and cut ourselves
off from His life-giving power. But God declares Christ’s
death to be the fitting Sacrifice for our sin. Christ stands
in our place, having paid the penalty of death for our sin.
He completely satisfies God’s demands. Our faith (unquestioning
belief) in His sacrifice brings us pardon, deliverance, and
freedom.
1 Corinthians 1:18 For
the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness;
but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. [KJV] The Gospel has great power! We must not keep
it to ourselves. We are commanded to pass it on! (Mat. 28:19).
James 2:19 Thou
believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils
also believe, and tremble. [KJV] True faith alone, in which we have a part in Christ’s
righteousness, atonement, and grace; saves our souls. Some ‘Christians’
merely agree to any form of doctrine. This is NOT a saving faith.
There is no way to show we really believe in Christ, if we are
not fruitful and produce good works. We must not only agree
in faith to the truth of the Word of God, but consent to take
Christ. True believing is not an act of the understanding only,
but a work of the whole heart. We must believe Jesus is who
He says He is, and can and will do what He says He will do.
Christian faith goes far beyond knowing what others believe.
When Jesus asks us: “Who do you say I am?” He wants
us to take a stand. Who do you say Jesus is?
Psalm 139:23-24 Search
me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:
[24] And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in
the way everlasting. [KJV] David
asked God to point out his sin to him, even to his sinful thoughts.
We recognize sin when God points it out, then we can repent
and be forgiven. If you ask the Lord to search your heart and
your thoughts and to reveal your sin, you are staying on God’s
“way everlasting.” God’s love concerning us
and our welfare are deep, and cannot be known. We can’t
imagine how many mercies we receive from Him. It would help
for us to fear (reverence) the Lord always. We should delight
in and bless our God for His precious salvation. Sin is hated
by God. We should earnestly desire and pray to be searched and
proved by His Word and His Spirit. If there be any wicked way
in me, let me see it; and please Lord, root it out of me. The
way of godliness is pleasing to God, and profitable to us; and
will end in everlasting life. It is the good and right way.
All the saints should seriously desire to be kept and led in
this way.
