Who Is The Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is the most mysterious member of the Trinity, which includes God the Father, God the Son (Jesus Christ), and God the Holy Spirit. Many people struggle with the idea that God is three Persons, yet one God. In truth, we will never be able to fully grasp this concept, not until we get to Heaven. Some cults wrongly teach that the Holy Spirit is nothing more than an "it." He is not a "Him" to them. Maybe this is because in some places, the Bible describes the Holy Spirit as being like or coming upon Jesus in the form of a "dove," or "cloven tongues like as of fire." Jesus referred to Himself as "the bread of life" and "the good shepherd." In the same way, God the Father is referred to as "a refuge" and "a consuming fire." This does NOT mean that Jesus is a loaf of bread or a sheep farmer, or that God the Father is a rock fortress or a furnace. These are simply ways used in Scripture to help us better understand God’s character. The unique descriptions attributed to the Holy Spirit do not imply that the Holy Spirit is merely some "force" or "power." Jesus said this about the Holy Spirit: John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. [KJV] Jesus uses the pronoun "He." The Holy Spirit has a Person! He is a distinct personality, and He also has specific work that He wants to do in our lives as followers of Jesus Christ. See below what the Bible says about Him.

  • 1. Who the Holy Spirit Helps. The Holy Spirit strengthens and empowers followers of Christ (see Acts 2:1-40).
  • 2. How the Holy Spirit Works with the Father and the Son. The Holy Spirit works alongside God the Father and Jesus, God’s Son, to make our lives pleasing to God (see 1 Peter 1:2).
  • 3. Why God Gives Us the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit’s Presence in our lives is God’s mark of ownership (see Ephes. 1:13-14).
  • 4. How the Holy Spirit Works in Our Lives. The Holy Spirit draws us to Christ, enters our heart and life at our conversion, and empowers us as we allow Him to work in our life (see John 14:15-17).
  • 5. When the Holy Spirit Can Be Sinned Against. There are specific ways we can sin against the Holy Spirit (see Acts 5:1-10).
  • 6. Why Christians Need the Holy Spirit. Living the Christian life is impossible without the Holy Spirit’s help (see Galatians 5:16-26).
  • 7. We are NOT true Christians (God’s children) unless we have the Holy Spirit abiding within us. Romans 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. [KJV]
