WHO IS THE DEVIL???
What
is the devil really like? Is he really
like the ugly, red suited, pitchfork-holding
cartoon character seated on a throne
in Hell? Or . . . does he roam through
the earth disguised as an angel
of light? Sad to say, far too many
people do not have an accurate view
of who the devil really is. Many underestimate
him and his superior ability, and some
even doubt his very existence. Someone
once asked the great evangelist Charles
Finney, “Mr. Finney, do you believe
in a literal devil?” Finney replied,
“You try opposing him for a while,
and you’ll see if he’s literal
or not.” You will find
just out how literal (real) the devil
is the moment you make a commitment
to Jesus Christ. The Bible
clearly shows us just how active and
conniving the devil really is. At the
same time, the Bible also tells about
the devil’s limitations and ultimate
demise. The more we understand the tactics
of this intelligent spirit being, the
better equipped we will be to ward off
his attacks. Below are some of the most
commonly asked questions about the devil
(Satan).
- 1. Where
Did Satan Come From? Satan was created an angel, and
probably the most beautiful creature
God ever created, but pride led
to his fall from Heaven (Ezekiel
28:12-19).
- 2.
What Are Satan’s Abilities? Satan does have
the power and access to do certain
things in this world (2 Cor.
4:3-4).
- 3.
What Are Satan’s Limitations? While we should
not underestimate Satan’s
power, we should realize that it
is limited (Job 1:1-2:10).
- 4.
Can Satan be in more than one place
at a time? NO! Satan is NOT omnipresent
as is our Creator God. The devil
can only be in one place at a time,
BUT, he has many demons under his
control, also all who are not God’s
children are children of the devil
(Mat. 13:38; John 8:44; Eph. 2:2;
1 John 3:10), and are under his
control.
- 5.
Who Can Thwart Satan’s Agenda? Only those who lay
down their lives for Christ will
defeat this evil foe (Rev. 12:10-12).
If believers “submit to God
and resist the devil” he will
flee from us (James 4:7).
- 6.
How Does Satan Attack People? Satan
masterfully uses manipulation and
distortion to deceive people (Genesis
3:1-7).
- 7. What are some ways Satan will
work in our lives?
There are many ways the devil will try to get us
to turn away from God:
- #1 Seduce by pleasure (1 Tim. 5:11-15)
- #2 Quote Scriptures to lead astray (Mat.4:6).
- #3 Afflict the body (2 Cor. 12:7)
- #4 Tempt by pride (1 Tim. 3:6)
- #5 Pluck away the seed of the Word (Mark 4:15)
- #6 Tempt by impure thoughts ( 1 Cor. 7:5)
- #7 Hinder through circumstances (1 Thes.2:18)
- #8 Severely buffet in a crises (Luke 22:31)
- #9 Tempt to hypocrisy and lying ( Acts 5:3)
- #10 Tries to make us deny Christ’s virgin birth, or His death and resurrection, or His ascension to Heaven, or His power, or His love for us, or His forgiveness of our sins, or His Second Coming.
THE
DEVIL:
• Sinned against God. 2 Peter 2:4 For
if God spared not the angels that sinned,
but cast them down to hell, and delivered
them into chains of darkness, to be
reserved unto judgment; [KJV] 1
John 3:8 He that committeth
sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth
from the beginning. For this purpose
the Son of God was manifested, that
he might destroy the works of the devil.
[KJV]
• Was
cast out of Heaven. Luke
10:18 And he said unto
them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall
from heaven. [KJV]
• Was
cast down to Hell. 2 Peter 2:4 For if God
spared not the angels that sinned, but
cast them down to hell, and delivered
them into chains of darkness, to be
reserved unto judgment; [KJV] Jude 1:6 And the angels
which kept not their first estate, but
left their own habitation, he hath reserved
in everlasting chains under darkness
unto the judgment of the great day.
[KJV]
• Was the author of the fall. Genesis 3:1 Now
the serpent was more subtil than any
beast of the field which the Lord God
had made. And he said unto the woman,
Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat
of every tree of the garden? [KJV] Genesis 3:6 And
when the woman saw that the tree was
good for food, and that it was pleasant
to the eyes, and a tree to be desired
to make one wise, she took of the fruit
thereof, and did eat, and gave also
unto her husband with her; and he did
eat. [KJV] Genesis 3:14 And the Lord God said unto
the serpent, Because thou hast done
this, thou art cursed above all cattle,
and above every beast of the field;
upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust
shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
[KJV] Genesis 3:24 So he drove out the man; and he
placed at the east of the garden of
Eden Cherubim, and a flaming sword which
turned every way, to keep the way of
the tree of life. [KJV]
• Tempted Christ. Matthew
4:3-10 And when the tempter
came to him, he said, If thou be the
Son of God, command that these stones
be made bread. [4] But he answered and
said, It
is written, Man shall not live by bread
alone, but by every word that proceedeth
out of the mouth of God.
[5] Then the devil taketh him up into
the holy city, and setteth him on a
pinnacle of the temple, [6] And saith
unto him, If thou be the Son of God,
cast thyself down: for it is written,
He shall give his angels charge concerning
thee: and in their hands they shall
bear thee up, lest at any time thou
dash thy foot against a stone. [7] Jesus
said unto him, It
is written again, Thou shalt not tempt
the Lord thy God. [8]
Again, the devil taketh him up into
an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth
him all the kingdoms of the world, and
the glory of them; [9] And saith unto
him, All these things will I give thee,
if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
[10] Then saith Jesus unto him, Get
thee hence, Satan: for it is written,
Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God,
and him only shalt thou serve. [KJV]
• Perverts
the Scripture. Matthew
4:6 And saith unto him,
If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself
down: for it is written, He shall give
his angels charge concerning thee: and
in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash
thy foot against a stone. [KJV] Psalm 91:11-12 For
he shall give his angels charge over
thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.
[12] They shall bear thee up in their
hands, lest thou dash thy foot against
a stone. [KJV]
• Opposes God’s work. Zech. 3:1 And he
shewed me Joshua the high priest standing
before the angel of the Lord, and Satan
standing at his right hand to resist
him. [KJV] 1 Thes. 2:18 Wherefore we would have
come unto you, even I Paul, once and
again; but Satan hindered us. [KJV]
• Hinders
the Gospel. Matthew
13:19 When
any one heareth the word of the kingdom,
and understandeth it not, then cometh
the wicked one, and catcheth away that
which was sown in his heart. This is
he which received seed by the way side. [KJV] 2
Cor. 4:4 In whom the god
of this world hath blinded the minds
of them which believe not, lest the
light of the glorious gospel of Christ,
who is the image of God, should shine
unto them. [KJV]
• Works
lying wonders. 2
Thes. 2:9 Even him, whose
coming is after the working of Satan
with all power and signs and lying wonders,
[KJV] Rev. 16:14 For
they are the spirits of devils, working
miracles, which go forth unto the kings
of the earth and of the whole world,
to gather them to the battle of that
great day of God Almighty. [KJV]
• Assumes
the form of an angel of light. 2 Cor. 11:14-15 And
no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed
into an angel of light. [15] Therefore
it is no great thing if his ministers
also be transformed as the ministers
of righteousness; whose end shall be
according to their works. [KJV]
THE
WICKED (lost souls):
• Are
the children of the devil. Matthew 13:38 The
field is the world; the good seed are
the children of the kingdom; but the
tares are the children of the wicked
one; [KJV] Acts
13:10 And said, O full
of all subtilty and all mischief, thou
child of the devil, thou enemy of all
righteousness, wilt thou not cease to
pervert the right ways of the Lord? [KJV] 1 John 3:10 In this the children of God are
manifest, and the children of the devil:
whosoever doeth not righteousness is
not of God, neither he that loveth not
his brother. [KJV]
• Turn
and follow the devil. 1 Tim. 5:15 For
some are already turned aside after
Satan. [KJV]
• Do the lusts of the devil. John
8:44 Ye
are of your father the devil, and the
lusts of your father ye will do. He
was a murderer from the beginning, and
abode not in the truth, because there
is no truth in him. When he speaketh
a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he
is a liar, and the father of it.
[KJV]
• Possessed
by the devil. Luke
22:3 Then entered Satan
into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being
of the number of the twelve. [KJV] Acts 5:3 But Peter said,
Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine
heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and
to keep back part of the price of the
land? [KJV] Ephes. 2:2 Wherein in time past ye
walked according to the course of this
world, according to the prince of the
power of the air, the spirit that now
worketh in the children of disobedience: [KJV]
• Blinded
by. 2 Cor. 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath
blinded the minds of them which believe
not, lest the light of the glorious
gospel of Christ, who is the image of
God, should shine unto them. [KJV]
• Deceived
by. 1 Kings
22:21-22 And there came
forth a spirit, and stood before the
Lord, and said, I will persuade him.
[22] And the Lord said unto him, Wherewith?
And he said, I will go forth, and I
will be a lying spirit in the mouth
of all his prophets. And he said, Thou
shalt persuade him, and prevail also:
go forth, and do so. [KJV] Rev.
20:7-8 And when the thousand
years are expired, Satan shall be loosed
out of his prison, [8] And shall go
out to deceive the nations which are
in the four quarters of the earth, Gog
and Magog, to gather them together to
battle: the number of whom is as the
sand of the sea. [KJV]
• Troubled
by. 1 Samuel
16:14 But the Spirit of
the Lord departed from Saul, and an
evil spirit from the Lord troubled him. [KJV]
• Punished,
together with Satan. Matthew 25:41 Then
shall he say also unto them on the left
hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into
everlasting fire, prepared for the devil
and his angels: [KJV]
SAINTS
(believers in Jesus):
• Are afflicted by the devil, but only
as God allows. Job
1:12 And the Lord said
unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath
is in thy power; only upon himself put
not forth thine hand. So Satan went
forth from the presence of the Lord.
[KJV] Job 2:4-7 And
Satan answered the Lord, and said, Skin
for skin, yea, all that a man hath will
he give for his life. [5] But put forth
thine hand now, and touch his bone and
his flesh, and he will curse thee to
thy face. [6] And the Lord said unto
Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand;
but save his life. [7] So went Satan
forth from the presence of the Lord,
and smote Job with sore boils from the
sole of his foot unto his crown. [KJV]
• Are
tempted by the devil. 1
Chron. 21:1 And Satan stood
up against Israel, and provoked David
to number Israel. [KJV] 1
Thes. 3:5 For this cause,
when I could no longer forbear, I sent
to know your faith, lest by some means
the tempter have tempted you, and our
labour be in vain. [KJV]
• Are
sifted (tested) by the devil. Luke 22:31 And
the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold,
Satan hath desired to have you, that
he may sift you as wheat: [KJV]
• Should
resist the devil. James
4:7 Submit yourselves therefore
to God. Resist the devil, and he will
flee from you. [KJV] 1
Peter 5:9 Whom resist stedfast
in the faith, knowing that the same
afflictions are accomplished in your
brethren that are in the world. [KJV]
• Should
be armed against the devil. Ephes. 6:11-16 Put on the whole armour
of God, that ye may be able to stand
against the wiles of the devil. [12]
For we wrestle not against flesh and
blood, but against principalities, against
powers, against the rulers of the darkness
of this world, against spiritual wickedness
in high places. [13] Wherefore take
unto you the whole armour of God, that
ye may be able to withstand in the evil
day, and having done all, to stand.
[14] Stand therefore, having your loins
girt about with truth, and having on
the breastplate of righteousness; [15]
And your feet shod with the preparation
of the gospel of peace; [16] Above all,
taking the shield of faith, wherewith
ye shall be able to quench all the fiery
darts of the wicked. [KJV]
• Should
be watchful against the devil. 2 Cor. 2:11 Lest Satan
should get an advantage of us: for we
are not ignorant of his devices. [KJV]
• Overcome
the devil. 1
John 2:13 I write unto
you, fathers, because ye have known
him that is from the beginning. I write
unto you, young men, because ye have
overcome the wicked one. I write unto
you, little children, because ye have
known the Father. [KJV] Rev.
12:10-11 And I heard a
loud voice saying in heaven, Now is
come salvation, and strength, and the
kingdom of our God, and the power of
his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren
is cast down, which accused them before
our God day and night. [11] And they
overcame him by the blood of the Lamb,
and by the word of their testimony;
and they loved not their lives unto
the death. [KJV]
• Shall
finally triumph over the devil. Romans 16:20 And the God
of peace shall bruise Satan under your
feet shortly. The grace of our Lord
Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.
[KJV]
CHRIST
WILL ABSOLUTELY BE VICTORIOUS OVER THE
DEVIL:
• Predicted. Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. [KJV] “It shall bruise thy head” foretells Satan’s defeat when Christ rose from the dead.
• In resisting the devil's temptations. Matthew 4:11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him. [KJV]
• In casting out resist the spirits of the devil. Luke 11:20 But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you. [KJV] Luke 13:32 And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day I shall be perfected. [KJV]
• Have victory in destroying the works of the devil. 1 John 3:8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. [KJV]
• Victory was completed by Jesus' Death. Col. 2:15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it. [KJV]
Hebrews 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; [KJV]
• Victory was illustrated. Luke 11:21-22 When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: [22] But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils. [KJV]
CHARACTERISTICS
OF THE DEVIL:
• Presumptuous. Job 1:6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them. [KJV]
• Proud. 1 Tim. 3:6 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. [KJV]
• Powerful. Ephes. 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: [KJV] Ephes. 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. [KJV]
• Wicked. 1 John 2:13 I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father. [KJV]
• Spiteful. Job 1:9 Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought? [KJV] Job 2:4 And Satan answered the Lord, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life. [KJV]
• Subtle. Genesis 3:1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? [KJV] 2 Cor. 11:3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. [KJV]
• Deceitful. 2 Cor. 11:14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. [KJV] Ephes. 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. [KJV]
• Fierce and cruel. Luke 8:29 (For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness.) [KJV] Luke 9:39 And, lo, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth again, and bruising him hardly departeth from him. [KJV] Luke 9:42 And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father. [KJV] 1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: [KJV]
• Cowardly. James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. [KJV]
Please
consider that all the characteristics
of Satan are completely opposite of
our awesome God.
All
Apostasy is of the devil.
2 Thes. 2:9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, [KJV] 2 Tim. 4:1 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; [KJV]
The
devil shall be condemned at the judgment.
Jude 1:6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. [KJV] Rev. 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. [KJV]
Everlasting fire (Hell) is prepared
for the devil.
Matthew
25:41 Then
shall he say also unto them on the left
hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into
everlasting fire, prepared for the devil
and his angels: [KJV]
SATAN COMPARED TO:
• A fowler. Psalm 91:3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. [KJV]
• Fowls. Matthew 13:4 And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: [KJV]
• A sower of tares. Matthew 13:25 But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way. [KJV] Matthew 13:28 He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? [KJV]
• A wolf. John 10:12 But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep. [KJV]
• A roaring lion. 1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: [KJV]
• A serpent. Rev. 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. [KJV] Rev. 20:2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, [KJV]
The
devil is very real. Satan was an angel
of God, but through enormous pride,
he became corrupt. The devil is God’s
enemy and ours! He constantly tries
to hinder God’s work, but is limited
by what he can do. Satan pursues believers
who are weak in their faith, who are
spiritually immature, or who are isolated
from other believers. Jesus has complete
power over Satan; He defeated Satan
when He died and rose again from the
dead. One day Satan will be bound forever,
never again to do his evil work.
SATAN
WORKING IN THE WORLD
Satan
is the devil. He hates Christ Jesus. Rev. 12:13 And
when the dragon saw that he was cast
unto the earth, he persecuted the woman
which brought forth the man child.
[KJV]
Satan hates God’s people. Rev. 12:17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. [KJV]
Satan has much power and authority. Rev. 13:2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority. [KJV]
He is very popular among unbelievers. Rev. 13:4 And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him? [KJV]
Satan blasphemes God. Rev. 13:6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven. [KJV]
Satan is at constant war with believers. Rev. 13:7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. [KJV]
Satan has great ability to deceive. Rev. 13:14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live. [KJV]
SATAN’S PLAN OF ATTACK
- Doubt. He makes you question God’s Word and God’s love, mercy and goodness.
- Discouragement. He makes you see your problems rather than seeing God.
- Diversion. He makes wrong things seem right and attractive to you.
- Defeat. He makes you feel like a failure so that you don’t even want to try.
- Delay. He makes you put off doing things so that it never gets done.
SATAN
HARD AT WORK
He seduces by pleasure. 1 Tim. 5:11-15 But the younger widows refuse: for when they have begun to wax wanton against Christ, they will marry; [12] Having damnation, because they have cast off their first faith. [13] And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not. [14] I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully. [15] For some are already turned aside after Satan. [KJV] Satan is indeed our worst enemy.
He quotes Scripture to lead astray. Matthew 4:6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. [KJV] He is quoting Psalm 91:11-12.
He can afflict our bodies. 2 Cor. 12:7 And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. [KJV]
He tempts by pride. 1 Tim. 3:6 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. [KJV]
He’ll pluck away the seed (Word of God). Mark 4:15 And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts. [KJV]
He’ll tempt by impure thoughts. 1 Cor. 7:5 Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency. [KLV]
He’ll hinder through circumstances. 1 Thes. 2:18 Wherefore we would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but Satan hindered us. [KJV]
He’ll severely strike in a crisis. Luke 22:31 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:[KJV]
He will tempt to hypocrisy and lies. Acts 5:3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? [KJV]
He will continually try to get you to deny Christ. Our answer! James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. [KJV]
He
really tries to get us to disobey God.
Occultists
get their power from him. Exodus 7:11 Then
Pharaoh also called the wise men and
the sorcerers: now the magicians of
Egypt, they also did in like manner
with their enchantments. [KJV]
Satan has power, but God has much more!
God leads to eternal life, Satan leads
to eternal death. Which do you want?
He can
imitate parts of God’s work to
deceive. Exodus
7:12 For they cast down
every man his rod, and they became serpents:
but Aaron's rod swallowed up their rods. [KJV] God performed a miracle by turning
Aaron’s staff into a snake, and
Pharaoh’s magicians did the same
through sorcery. Satan can imitate some
parts of God’s work and lead people
astray.
Does Satan
speak with God? Job
1:7 And the Lord said unto
Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan
answered the Lord, and said, From going
to and fro in the earth, and from walking
up and down in it. [KJV]
God knows
all that he does. Job
1:12 And the Lord said
unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath
is in thy power; only upon himself put
not forth thine hand. So Satan went
forth from the presence of the Lord. [KJV]
How he
tempted Jesus. Matthew
4:1-10 Then was Jesus led
up of the Spirit into the wilderness
to be tempted of the devil. [2] And
when he had fasted forty days and forty
nights, he was afterward an hungred.
[3] And when the tempter came to him,
he said, If thou be the Son of God,
command that these stones be made bread.
[4] But he answered and said, It is
written, Man shall not live by bread
alone, but by every word that proceedeth
out of the mouth of God. [5] Then the
devil taketh him up into the holy city,
and setteth him on a pinnacle of the
temple, [6] And saith unto him, If thou
be the Son of God, cast thyself down:
for it is written, He shall give his
angels charge concerning thee: and in
their hands they shall bear thee up,
lest at any time thou dash thy foot
against a stone. [7] Jesus said unto
him, It is written again, Thou shalt
not tempt the Lord thy God. [8] Again,
the devil taketh him up into an exceeding
high mountain, and sheweth him all the
kingdoms of the world, and the glory
of them; [9] And saith unto him, All
these things will I give thee, if thou
wilt fall down and worship me. [10]
Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee
hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou
shalt worship the Lord thy God, and
him only shalt thou serve. [KJV] Could
he really give Jesus the kingdoms of
the world? The devil does indeed have
great power, and could have given temporary
control and free rein over the Earth
because of humanity’s sinfulness.
But Jesus declined.

Satan is
a fallen angel who lost his former position
as a high-ranking angel in heaven because
of his pride.
Isaiah
14:12-15 How art thou fallen
from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!
how art thou cut down to the ground,
which didst weaken the nations! [13]
For thou hast said in thine heart, I
will ascend into heaven, I will exalt
my throne above the stars of God: I
will sit also upon the mount of the
congregation, in the sides of the north:
[14] I will ascend above the heights
of the clouds; I will be like the most
High. [15] Yet thou shalt be brought
down to hell, to the sides of the pit. (KJV)
Rev.
20:10 And the devil that
deceived them was cast into lake of
fire and brimstone, where the beast
and the false prophet are, and shall
be tormented day and night for ever
and ever. (KJV)
Satan
does have power in this world. His main
weapon is lying . . . he wants you to
believe what is false so you won’t
follow God’s Word. Satan really
is a liar and always up to no good. STAY AWAY
FROM HIM! Anything connected
with the occult is connected to Satan:
things like Ouija boards, tarrot cards,
fortune telling, horoscopes, divining,
etc.
What kind of power does Satan have?
Can Satan hurt you? Is Satan real? Satan
is real! YES! he can hurt you more than
you know! If you continue to listen
to him, and let him be your master,
he will take you with him to an everlasting HELL! .
Satan
does NOT want you on Jesus’ side.
He will do anything he can to make you
turn away from Jesus! He hates Jesus
and wants you to forget you ever heard
about Him. You can win out over the
devil with God’s help; for “greater
is He who is in you (the Holy Spirit)
than he who is in the world (the devil).”
1 John 4:4. You do NOT want to listen
to the devil! BEWARE! He’s out
to get you.
People
today are very interested in the occult.
Interest in witchcraft, magic, seances,
and fortune telling has soared. Even
highly respected magazines publish articles
on the spirit world. People who claim
to be able to reveal the future are
in great demand. Recently I read or
was told that Europe has more people
practicing the occult than there were
ministers and priests. People want to
know about future events.
Believers are not surprised by all this
interest in the occult. We know that
our war is not fought with what can
be seen, but with that which cannot
be seen.
Ephesians 6:12 For
we wrestle not against flesh and blood,
but against principalities, against
powers, against the rulers of the darkness
of this world, against spiritual wickedness
in high places. [KJV] Our enemies
are the unseen spiritual world; those
who oppose God. They hate God and Christ,
and will do everything in their power
to keep Christians from standing firm
with Christ. They hate the Gospel of
Christ and are in total opposition to
it.
This multitude of invisible, wicked,
spiritual beings are under complete
control of Satan. The devil was not
alone in his revolt against God. He
took a third of the angels with him
(Rev.12:4). Peter also spoke of the
angels who sinned (2 Pet.2:4); as did
Jude (Jude 6). These fallen angels are
what I consider demons or evil spirits.
Some believe
that demons are not these fallen angels,
but instead disembodied spirits of a
race of people who lived on Earth before
Adam was created by God. I cannot and
will not go along with this. No where
in God’s Word does it tell us
of this pre-Adamic people.
Others
believe that demons are not fallen angels
but spirits of a race of giants produced
by angelic “sons of God”
who came to Earth and married human
“daughters of men” (Gen.6:1-4).
I cannot go along with this one either
for angels do not marry or reproduce
(Matthew 22:30; Mark 12:25). According
to what I can gather, angels are not
male and/or female, and they are void
of sexual lust.
One thing
is certain, and that is Satan has a
multitude of evil spirits under his
control. These beings are spiritual
(nonmaterial). They do not possess bodies
like humans do. These evil beings of
the unseen world are morally corrupt.
Because of their filthy nature, they
delight in leading men and women (and
children) into immoral filth. They are
evil through and through and they will
never repent so they can never be
forgiven by God. They will never be
holy nor ever pray to be holy. And even
though they recognize Jesus as the Christ
(James 2:19), they will never love and
worship Him.
As believers,
we are up against “spiritual hosts
of wickedness” and if we rely
on our own strength, we are doomed.
We have lost the battle and the war.
Our enemies are far too powerful and
numerous. But God knows what we are
up against, and He has given us the
means to overcome our enemies. We
don’t have to fail. We can win. We have God’s Word to
guide us, the indwelling Holy Spirit
of God within us, a living Saviour and
last but not least, the power of prayer. James 4:7 Submit
yourselves therefore to God. Resist
the devil, and he will flee from you. [KJV] The KEY to our victory: “submit
to God.” We have wonderful
comforting and encouraging words from
God’s Word.
1 John 4:4 Ye are of God, little children,
and have overcome them: because greater
is he that is in you, than he that is
in the world. [KJV]
Believers in Jesus are in a never ending
battle against spiritual enemies.
Ephes. 2:2 Wherein
in time past ye walked according to
the course of this world, according
to the prince of the power of the air,
the spirit that now worketh in the children
of disobedience: [KJV]
1
John 5:19 We know that
we are children of God and that the
world around us is under the power and
control of the evil one. [KJV]
1 John 2:15 Love
not the world, neither the things that
are in the world. If any man love the
world, the love of the Father is not
in him. [KJV] What is this “world”
that is the enemy of God and of believers?
It is not the Earth --- it is the evil
system and the unseen spiritual realm
under control of Satan. It’s a
system that tries to persuade people
they do NOT need Jesus. It’s a
system that tries to persuade people
that wrong principles, selfish desires,
improper motives, immoral conduct and
inadequate standards are A-OK.
Satan
has great influence on the world system.
He and his demon agents focus their
attacks on areas that have strategic
importance, where it will reach the
largest amount of people. For instance,
someone who writes a book on the occult
or witchcraft will have success, for
it will reach millions of gullible people.
He also operates quietly and invisibly
in the minds and wills of those who
rule the country. The devil is cunning
and masterful in his trying to manipulate
these people, and most often very successful.
In the Old Testament, in the Book of
Daniel, there is a good example of Satan’s
mastery.
Daniel 10:12-13 Then said he
unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from
the first day that thou didst set thine
heart to understand, and to chasten
thyself before thy God, thy words were
heard, and I am come for thy words.
[13] But the prince of the kingdom of
Persia withstood me one and twenty days:
but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes,
came to help me; and I remained there
with the kings of Persia. [KJV] An angel
had been sent to help Daniel. Here,
he told Daniel that he had been delayed
for 21 days by the “prince of
the kingdom of Persia.” It seems
that this “prince” was an
evil spirit, sent on an assignment by
Satan. It was only when Michael the
arch angel came to the angel’s
rescue that he was able to reach Daniel
and fulfill his mission. This 21 day
standoff was clearly between spirit
beings; the good and the bad.
People in high political office are
always top targets for Satan and his
emissaries.
More great candidates for Satan’s
attacks are those who lust for power,
wealth and fame. Some of these people
will do anything to satisfy their insatiable
lusts, and Satan gives them the chance
to do so.
In our day, we have seen or heard about
the utter brutality of the Nazis and
Communists. Even animals are not that
vicious. We have seen them lie, enslave,
oppress and commit mass murder and not
even show any sign whatsoever of remorse
or shame for what they had done. This
was Satan hard at work in the lives
of those rulers, and those who carried
out those injustices. When men reject
God and His love and goodness, they
are wide open to Satan and his hatred
and wickedness. The truth is that it
is not the human officials who do these
deeds, but the “rulers of the
darkness of this age” (Satan and
his horde of evil spirits). When people
disobey God, they obey the devil, thus
their hearts and minds are dominated
by Satan’s influence.
We face many enemies, and they are indeed
very powerful. But we do NOT have to
give in to them. IF we “submit
to God” we can face these enemies
with boldness, for God has told us that
he will “flee.” God has
promised He will never leave or forsake
us. We can count on that! God does NOT
break any Promises He makes, ever!
We
need to remember: (1) God is in absolute
control of everything; the social and
political domains of this entire world.
Satan and his demons can go only as
far as God permits. (2) The power of
Satan and his demons is absolutely limited,
by the presence of believers in the
world. Believers in Christ have been
redeemed from the power of this wicked
world. The Holy Spirit who indwells
all believers restrains satanic evil
from us.
(3) Satan’s absolute destruction
is guaranteed. The death and resurrection
of Christ Jesus has “disarmed
principalities and powers.”
Col.
2:15 And having spoiled principalities
and powers, he made a shew of them openly,
triumphing over them in it. [KJV] It was through Jesus’ death
that he destroyed the devil’s
power over death.
Hebrews 2:14 Forasmuch
then as the children are partakers of
flesh and blood, he also himself likewise
took part of the same; that through
death he might destroy him that had
the power of death, that is, the devil; [KJV]
But even with all this, Satan will continue
to plague us as long as we are on Earth.
1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because
your adversary the devil, as a roaring
lion, walketh about, seeking whom he
may devour: [KJV] Satan will continue
trying to deceive us, for he is our
enemy, but, he is an already condemned
enemy!
Rev. 20:10 And the devil that deceived
them was cast into the lake of fire
and brimstone, where the beast and the
false prophet are, and shall be tormented
day and night for ever and ever. [KJV]
The devil’s fate is sealed. His
destiny is sure! Praise God, that we
who know the Lord are on the right side,
the winning side!
Let’s face it! We are in a battle.
Those who are unbelievers should realize
that Satan is after their soul. Those
who are believers should realize that
Satan’s powerful influence on
you can make a difference when you stand
before the judgment seat of
Christ. Don’t let him demoralize
and corrupt you. Don’t let him
coax and beguile you into backsliding
from God. A true Christian can never
be demon possessed, but --- a true Christian
can be demon oppressed. You can be burdened
by evil spirits, they can
overload your heart with pain and sorrow,
encumber and perplex your mind, and
they can tax your strength. They can
cause you to doubt your salvation which
will weaken your faith. No one is exempt
from evil spirits controlled by their
master, Satan, especially true believers.
They will come at you from every angle!
Beware! Humble yourself and submit to
God!
Even though we are in a spiritual war,
we do have assistance from God.
Ephesians 6:13-18 Wherefore take unto
you the whole armour of God, that ye
may be able to withstand in the evil
day, and having done all, to stand.
[14] Stand therefore, having your loins
girt about with truth, and having on
the breastplate of righteousness; [15]
And your feet shod with the preparation
of the gospel of peace; [16] Above all,
taking the shield of faith, wherewith
ye shall be able to quench all the fiery
darts of the wicked. [17] And take the
helmet of salvation, and the sword of
the Spirit, which is the word of God:
[18] Praying always with all prayer
and supplication in the Spirit, and
watching thereunto with all perseverance
and supplication for all saints; [KJV]
IF we faithfully use this equipment
provided by God, we will be able to
win the battle!
The Belt of Truth. NO one can ever resist
evil influences if they are hypocrites
or dishonest. We must truly desire victory
over sin, we must long for it. We must
hate sin as God hates it and reveal
that we hate it.
The Breastplate of Righteousness. NO
one can ever resist evil influences
if they disobey God. We must choose
to live a life of obedience to God,
being upright, holy and just. Unless
we live a right life, we cannot be effective
or successful in winning lost souls
to Christ. Satan trembles at the sight
of a godly person because he knows Christ
is in us.
The Shoes of the Gospel. NO one can
ever resist evil influences if they
are not willing to tell the Good News
to others. Most people think this job
is only for pastors and teachers. Wrong!
If you are a true Christian, it is your
job! It was your job from the very first
day you turned to Christ. We should
always be ready to share with others
what Christ has done in our lives: the
love, peace, joy and forgiveness we
have now that we didn’t have before.
When we do not witness for Christ, we
are much more vulnerable to evil spirits
attacking us.
The Shield of Faith. NO one can ever
resist evil influences if they do not
carry the shield of faith before them.
1 John 5:4 For whatsoever is born of
God overcometh the world: and this is
the victory that overcometh the world,
even our faith. [KJV] We must do all
we can to strengthen and increase our
faith by Bible study, prayer and fellowship
with other believers.
The Helmet of Salvation. NO one can
ever resist evil influences if they
have the slightest doubt they are not
saved. We should remind ourselves that
we have been redeemed by the precious Blood of Jesus,
and that we have passed from death to
life and we are no longer under condemnation.
Study of God’s Word gives us assurance
of our salvation, and makes us confident
and joyful Christians. Satan’s
influence
over us when we have this confidence,
is minor to say the least.
The Sword of the Spirit. NO one can
ever resist evil influences without
the Word of God. Reading and obeying
it in faith will always send evil spirits
fleeing. We can never experience victory
without God’s gracious help. When
Jesus was tempted by the devil in the
wilderness, Jesus responded to each
of Satan’s attacks by: “It
is written.” We have no greater
or better means for overcoming our unseen
enemy than the Sword of the Spirit (God’s
Word). Let us put on the WHOLE armor
of God so that we are able to withstand
the assaults of our dreaded enemy.
Remember, we as believers cannot be
demon possessed, nor can the completely
dominate our personality. Born again
believers take on a new divine nature
(2 Pet.1:4). We are new creations (2 Cor.5:17). Our
bodies are temples of God (1 Cor.6:19).
Let us always remember that “greater
is He that is in you, than he that is
in the world” (1 John 4:4). Because
the Holy Spirit is within us forever
(John 4:16), we can never be demon possessed.
Satan cannot live where God lives.
THE OCCULT
The occult must be considered when speaking
of the unseen world. The occult is of
pagan origin. Wearing of figures, images,
medals, amulets, or any good luck charms
belongs to the realm of the occult.
There are many practices within the
occult by which it is believed a person
can see into the future. Livers of animals
are used for omens for the future. Ripples
caused by dropping a coin or stone into
water were considered important. Reading
tea leaves to predict the future. Witching
for water. Horoscopes too are of the
occult. Fortune tellers claim to have
the gift of divination. Voodoo is the
occult. Necromancy is widely used; the
so-called ability to reach and speak
with the dead (spirit world). And many
more.
What does God have to say?
Deut. 18:9-14 When thou art come into
the land which the Lord thy God giveth
thee, thou shalt not learn to do after
the abominations of those nations. [10]
There shall not be found among you any
one that maketh his son or his daughter
to pass through the fire, or that useth
divination, or an observer of times,
or an enchanter, or a witch, [11] Or
a charmer, or a consulter with familiar
spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
[12] For all that do these things are
an abomination unto the Lord: and because
of these abominations the Lord thy God
doth drive them out from before thee.
[13] Thou shalt be perfect with the
Lord thy God. [14] For these nations,
which thou shalt possess, hearkened
unto observers of times, and unto diviners:
but as for thee, the Lord thy God hath
not suffered thee so to do. [KJV] Israel
was NOT to participate in the occult,
and neither are we! ALL magical or occult
practices, including horoscopes and
fortune telling must be shunned, no
matter how insignificant it may seem
to you! It ALL is an abomination to
Almighty God.
Witchcraft,
Sorcery
Witchcraft
(1 Sam.15:23; 2 Kings 9:22; 2 Chron.
33:6; Micah 5:12; Nah.3:4; Gal. 5:20).
The “witch of En-dor” (1
Sam. 28) was a necromancer (one who
faked) to hold conversations with the
dead. The damsel with “a spirit
of divination” (Acts 16:16) was
possessed by an evil spirit.
Witchcraft
can take on many different names: sorcery,
necromancers, wizardry, voodoo, divination,
magic, black magic, demonology, enchantment,
occultism, alchemy, hocus pocus, trickery,
fortune telling, horoscopes, deception,
etc. ALL of these are wrong in God’s
eyes!
A demon
is an evil spirit. Daemon was used to
refer to idols and pagan gods in general,
as well as to spirits that might take
possession of human beings. Such spirits
were thought to be responsible for sickness,
and could be expelled by means of exorcism.
Demon is often synonymous with devil,
which comes from the Greek diabolos
or deceiver. Diabolos also refers to
Satan, the prince of demons. Belief
in evil spirits is very widespread in
traditional cultures all over the world.
In the
world today, witchcraft is a form of
nature religion that stresses the healing
arts. This term is also used in different
kinds of magic practiced in Asia, Africa
and Latin America. Witchcraft in Europe
is believed to be a harmful sorcery
connected with the worship of Satan
(the devil).
God has
nothing good to say about any form of
witchcraft!
Lev.19:31 Regard not them
that have familiar spirits, neither
seek after wizards, to be defiled by
them: I am the Lord your God. [KJV]
Lev. 20:6 And the soul that turneth
after such as have familiar spirits,
and after wizards, to go a whoring after
them, I will even set my face against
that soul, and will cut him off from
among his people. [KJV]
Lev.20:27 A
man also or woman that hath a familiar
spirit, or that is a wizard, shall surely
be put to death: they shall stone them
with stones: their blood shall be upon
them. [KJV]
Witchcraft
(sorcery) forbidden by God!
Deut. 18:9-14 When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.
[10] There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,
[11] Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
[12] For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.
[13] Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God.
[14] For these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners: but as for thee, the LORD thy God hath not suffered thee so to do. (KJV)
Lev.19:26-28 Ye shall not eat any thing with the blood: neither shall ye use enchantment, nor observe times.
[27] Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard.
[28] Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD. (KJV)
Witchcraft
(sorcery) denounced by God!
Isaiah 8:19 And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead? (KJV)
Malachi 3:5 And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the LORD of hosts. (KJV)
Messages
of those who practice witchcraft are
false!
Zech. 10:2 For the idols have spoken vanity, and the diviners have seen a lie, and have told false dreams; they comfort in vain: therefore they went their way as a flock, they were troubled, because there was no shepherd. (KJV)
2 Thes. 2:9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, (KJV) This verse is speaking of the
Antichrist. The world today is readying
itself for this man and his lies and
false miracles.
2 Thes. 2:10-12 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
[11] And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
[12] That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness. (KJV) This prophecy
shall be fulfilled! Guaranteed!
Witchcraft belongs to the works of the
flesh!

hatred, variance, emulations, wrath,
strife, seditions, heresies, [KJV] Any
form of, or participation in demonic
activities is NEVER right in God’s
eyes! He condemns it. It is an abomination
to Him (Deut.13:14).

Satanism
is the worship of Satan, (devil worship). It involves black magic, sorcery, and
the calling upon demons and the forces
of darkness, who are appeased by blood
sacrifices. Satanists believe that Satan
is the power behind the processes of
nature. Sin to them is only what is
unpleasant. They consider the God of
the Bible to be stern and moralistic,
who restrains them from free expression
with difficult and unnatural commandments
under threat of punishment. They see
Satan as the leader of a liberated people
who are free and indeed encouraged to
indulge in the good things of life,
including unrestrained sexual activity.
Satanism is identified with witchcraft.
Facts
About Satan
Rev. 12:9 And the great
dragon was cast out, that old serpent,
called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth
the whole world: he was cast out into
the earth, and his angels were cast
out with him. [KJV] The devil is very
real. Originally Satan was an angel
of God, but through his own pride, he
became corrupt.
Isaiah 14:13-14 For thou hast said in thine
heart, I will ascend into heaven, I
will exalt my throne above the stars
of God: I will sit also upon the mount
of the congregation, in the sides of
the north: [14] I will ascend above
the heights of the clouds; I will be
like the most High. [KJV] Satan’s
pride overpowered him. He wanted to
be like Almighty God, he wanted to be
god!
Satan
is God’s enemy. He constantly tries to hinder God’s
work, but he is absolutely limited by
God’s power and can do only what
God allows him to do (Job 1:6-2:8).
The name Satan means “accuser”
(Rev. 12:10). He vigorously looks for
people that he can attack (1 Peter 5:8-9).
He goes after believers who are vulnerable
in their faith, who are spiritually
weak, or those who are isolated from
other believers. Even though God allows
Satan to do his evil work in this world,
God is still in control. And Jesus has
complete power over Satan! Our Lord
Jesus defeated Satan when He died and
rose again for the sins of mankind.
One day Satan will be bound forever,
never again to do his evil work.
Rev.
20:10 And the devil that deceived them
was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone,
where the beast and the false prophet
are, and shall be tormented day and
night for ever and ever. [KJV] Satan’s
power is not eternal as is the God of
the Bible. His power will one day come
to a swift end, and he will meet his
doom, along with every one who chooses
to follow him and listen to his lies.
Satan began
his evil work in mankind at the very
beginning (Genesis 3:1-6). He is still
at it! But he will be sentenced one
day to the lake of burning sulfur (Hell),
where he will never be released. He
will never be a threat to anyone again.
Matthew
25:41 Then shall he say also unto them
on the left hand, Depart from me, ye
cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared
for the devil and his angels: [KJV] Matthew 25:46 And these shall go away
into everlasting punishment: but the
righteous into life eternal. [KJV]
BEWARE! Anyone who chooses to follow Satan and
listen to his lies will receive the
same punishment as Satan. Please do
not attempt any form of witchcraft or
participate in it in any way. Satan
is behind any and all of it! Please
believe this! And whatever you do, do
NOT worship the devil! Do NOT go over
to his side in any way. Almighty God
will not permit you to enter Heaven, but instead Hell!
If you
want to go to Heaven, you must go through
Jesus. He is the only Way to the Father
who is in Heaven.
John 14:6 Jesus
saith unto him, I
am the way, the truth, and the life:
no man cometh unto the Father, but by
me. [KJV]
Acts 4:12 Neither
is there salvation in any other: for
there is none other name under heaven
given among men, whereby we must be
saved. [KJV]
1 John 5:10-12 He
that believeth on the Son of God hath
the witness in himself: he that believeth
not God hath made him a liar; because
he believeth not the record that God
gave of his Son. [11] And this is the
record, that God hath given to us eternal
life, and this life is in his Son. [12]
He that hath the Son hath life; and
he that hath not the Son of God hath
not life. [KJV]
John 3:18 He
that believeth on him is not condemned:
but he that believeth not is condemned
already, because he hath not believed
in the name of the only begotten Son
of God. [KJV]
John 3:36 He that
believeth on the Son hath everlasting
life: and he that believeth not the
Son shall not see life; but the wrath
of God abideth on him. [KJV]
