SHOULD DISCIPLES OF CHRIST
CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS?

I remember the first time someone called Christmas a "pagan holiday." I was deeply angered, that anyone could think such a terrible thing! Wasn’t our Lord Jesus born on Christmas day? How could they think Christmas was started by the pagans?

Well, since that time years ago, I have changed my mind completely about Christmas, and I now agree whole heartedly with this couple that called Christmas a "pagan holiday." And, as these people deeply angered me back then, I know for a fact that I too will anger many by my beliefs. But, since I have researched the subject of Christmas, and know what the Bible states, and what Jesus states, I can no longer "celebrate Christmas." In fact, it now deeply offends me because in my heart, the Holy Spirit has convinced me it is a sin.

I know there will be many who pick up this article, that will never finish it, because they FEEL that I am wrong! All I ask, is that you read with an open mind and let God lead you, let God discern for you if I am speaking Truth or not.

First, let me say that the virgin birth of our Lord Jesus is a vital necessity to the Gospel of Christ. I fully believe in it and I would never diminish its importance in any way. Jesus' virgin birth is a sound Biblical doctrine as is His death, resurrection and ascension; but NOWHERE in God’s Word does it say anything about Christmas; NOWHERE does it say we are to celebrate the birth of Christ. There are only two birthday celebrations mentioned in the Bible and BOTH are connected with murder (Genesis 40:20-22; Matthew 14:1-12).

IF Jesus had wanted us to celebrate His birth, He most certainly would have told us; but, He did NOT tell us to do so. We are told to "remember" His death, and each time we receive communion, we can celebrate His sacrificial death for us; but NOWHERE does Jesus tell us to celebrate His Birth. 1 Cor. 11:24-25 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. [25] After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. [KJV]

The Bible is God’s Word to mankind. In its pages, it holds all we need to know about how we should live in this brief life on Earth. It tells us what we should do and what we should not do. If we read anything else into it, such as celebrating Christmas, we are adding to it. No person has the right to change God’s Word (Deut. 4:2; 12:32; Prov.30:5-6; Rev. 22:18-19).

Was Jesus really born on December 25?

Luke 2:7-15 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. [8] And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. [9] And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. [10] And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. [11] For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. [12] And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. [13] And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, [14] Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. [15] And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. [KJV] The month of December is the middle of the rainy season where Jesus was born, and to my knowledge all the sheep were kept in the folds at that time of the year. The shepherds kept the sheep in pens normally from October until April each year. So, IF this is true, Jesus could NOT have been born in December because the shepherds would not have been in the fields at night in December.

Luke 2:1-3 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. [2] (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) [3] And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. [KJV] This is yet another reason Jesus could not have been born in December. The ruler of Rome would not have set a date to be taxed in the middle of winter, for travel would have been very difficult and some could not have made it. He would have set a date when weather permitted so everyone could be taxed. Jesus told of the hardships of travel in winter. Matthew 24:19-20 And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days! [20] But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day: [KJV]

No, it is NOT important exactly when Jesus was born. What is important is that He was born, and He then GREW UP into a Man, who then died for our sins. We do NOT worship a tiny, helpless baby lying in a manger, we worship a grown Man, a risen and exalted Saviour, Christ Jesus our Lord.

Some may say as I once did, that it doesn’t matter WHEN Jesus was born, we will just celebrate His birth on Christmas day. But. let's go a little further.

How did Christmas originate? With God? NO! NOT with God! It started with the sun worshippers way back in the time of Nimrod and the tower of Babel. Was that of God? NO! That was an utter abomination to our Almighty God (Genesis 11:1-9). Christmas was actually celebrated thousands of years before Jesus was even born! And it was on December 25th that it was celebrated. They celebrated the birthday of the sun god, Tammuz on that day. It was, and it still is IDOLATRY!

The virgin birth of Jesus is indeed a blessed and holy fact, but the celebration of Christmas is an ungodly and sinful thing.

CHRISTMAS AND THE WORLD

1 John 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. [KJV] Worldly customs and traditions of Christmas draws the heart away from God. When love of the world predominates, our love of God decays. Unless victory over the world is begun in our heart, we have no root in ourselves, and we will fall away. Vanities are very alluring, and will corrupt our hearts, without constant watching and prayer.

Colossians 3:2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. (KJV) When we "set our minds on things above" we look at life from God’s perspective and seek His will and desires. The more we consider the world around us as God does, the more we will live in harmony with Him. We must not become attached to temporary customs and traditions, but consider instead eternity with God.

Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. [KJV] We are not to copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God’s Spirit transform us into a new person by changing the way we think. Then, and only then, will we know what God really wants us to do, and then and only then will we know how good and pleasing and perfect His will really is. It is only when the Holy Spirit renews us, reeducates us, and redirects our minds that we will see the Truth as God sees it.

There are millions of non-Christians (unbelievers) around the world who celebrate Christmas. Doesn’t this seem strange to you? IF Christmas is a Christian holiday, why do all these unbelievers, who hate Christ and what He stands for, celebrate His supposed birth? There are people in the world who know nothing of the Bible or Jesus, yet they celebrate Christmas. IF December 25th were the birthday of God’s only begotten Son, Jesus the Christ, do you honestly think the world would have anything to do with it? NO! Absolutely Not!

Luke 16:15 And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God. [KJV] This is a solemn warning from our Lord. We CANNOT serve God and go along with idolatrous customs of the world. There are many things that are considered of great value by people, yet they are worth nothing in God's eyes; and the more I know of Christmas, the more I know God is really angered with it.

IF you are honest with yourself, you must admit that Christmas is NOT of God, but is an idol. The world simply adores Christmas, but it hates Christ! Which does the world "esteem" (reverence) Christ? OR Christmas??? The world reverences Christmas, NOT Christ!

There are so many unscriptural traditions connected with Christmas. Exchanging gifts has absolutely NOTHING to do with the birth of Christ. Who received gifts when Jesus was born? The Baby Jesus, that’s Who! The wise men gave gifts to Jesus because it was a custom in that area to give gifts to a king. The wise men brought gifts because Jesus was born to be the King of the Jews. The gifts were NOT birthday gifts. The wise men did not visit Jesus until He was about two years old (Matthew 2:16). The shepherds visited Him at His birth, but the wise men did it about 2 years later.

The Christmas tree is an idolatrous custom. Jeremiah 10:3 For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. (KJV)

God does NOT want His children to learn the way of the heathen. Jerremiah 10:2 Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. (KJV)

The "green tree" is mentioned many times in the Old Testament, and EVERY time it is connected with idolatry (Deut.12:2; 1 Kings 14:23; 2 Kings 16:4; 17:10; 2 Chron. 28:4; Jer.2:20; 3:6, 13; Eze.6:13; 17:24; 20:47). There is NO reason whatsoever in the Word of God for a Christmas tree! I’m sure there are many Christians who think they are honoring Jesus by having a beautiful tree; but in fact, they are dishonoring our Lord!

They are instead honoring a false god in the pagan festival of Christmas.

I know there will be those who say "I don’t worship Christmas or the Christmas tree." IF they are not idols to you, then GIVE THEM UP!

What about the lies about Santa Claus? Yes, you are lying to your children when you tell them about Santa Claus! We should teach our children the Truth about Christmas. We should never lie to them or any one else (Eph.4:25). Children taught about Santa Claus could well grow up believing that Christ too is a fairy tale, just as is Santa Claus.

Galatians 4:9-11 But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage? [10] Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years. [11] I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain. [KJV] Once you become a child of God by belief in Jesus (John 1:12-13), why do you want to become slaves all over again, by paying special attention to certain days, months, seasons, and years. God does not want us to "observe" any holy days in this dispensation of grace in which we now live.

Christmas is good only for stores to make money and people to party. Christmas is NOT in the Bible! There should be NO special holy days for true believers. God’s will and desire for us is that we worship and serve Him 365 days a year!

Born again Christians should have no superstitions of times or seasons, therefore the annual event of Christmas should not be celebrated by us. Even though the majority of the world goes along, hog-wild for Christmas and its decorated trees, gift swapping, Santa Claus and wild parties; God’s children should not participate in this pagan tradition.

2 Corinthians 6:17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, [KJV] God considers Christmas "unclean." The more I study God’s Word, the more I know that Christmas is an abomination to Him. At one time I did not think so. I thought Christmas was a most worshipful time of the year; but when you truly desire to know the Truth (Matthew 5:6), God will see to it that you are enlightened. But there are those (many) who simply do not want to know the Truth, and if that is the case with you, the Holy Spirit cannot persuade you that Christmas is wrong in God’s eyes. It took me a while to finally admit that God’s Word is right and Truth, and I was WRONG. Now when I look back, I wonder what took me so long; for the Truth was right there in front of me the whole time. I simply did not want to give up the custom and tradition of Christmas.

The pagan history of Christmas has always been known by those who truly wanted to know. In 1644 Parliament declared Christmas to be unlawful and it was canceled. Puritans considered Christmas to be the work of Satan. At one time in early America, Christmas was illegal, but somehow, down through the years, it crept back in and is now a holiday for the entire world. If we celebrate Christmas, we are disobeying Almighty God, for we are not coming out from among them.

John 15:18-19 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. [19] If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. [KJV] These words of Jesus makes me feel so alone at times, because I know I am one of the extreme "few" who does not observe Christmas. The world once hated Jesus too, so I consider myself in the best of company! If I do not take my stand with Christ and speak out the Truth, knowing what I know about Christmas, I am not worthy of Him.
